Obituary for Judith D Daniels (Burnside)

Judith D Daniels (Burnside)
October 20, 1935-January 25, 2016. Beloved middle daughter of the late Dale and Marie (nee: Grandish) Burnside. Precious, mischievous sister of Patricia (the late Joseph) Scaffidi and Alice (Jack) Burnside-Harrington. Loving, devoted, proud mother of Jenny (John) Kerley, Peggy (Gene) Theisen and Annette (Dave) Schmocker. Hilarious, much-loved grandmother of Kyle (Laura Miller, fiancé) and Daniel Kerley. Dear aunt of Josephine Scaffidi, Laura (Jeff) Kopczynski, the late Tony Scaffidi, Sandra Scaffidi and Nick (Angie) Scaffidi. Wacky, adored cousin of Buddy Grandish, the late Dawn & Pam Grandish; Susan, Kathryn & Mary Strand; Richard Grandish; Debbie & Jeff Cox; Kate, Barb & Jan Kirk; Mike, David & Dan Diamon.

Judy was born in Ashland, WI, but grew up in Cudahy and lived there the majority of her life. One of the highlights early in her life was when her family moved to Montana for a year to do church missionary work on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation in Box Elder. The experience had a significant impact on her life and was something that remained forever near and dear to her heart.

Judy was a homemaker extraordinaire and family was everything to her. She was an excellent mother who raised three beautiful, marvelous daughters and called them every year on their birthday at the time of their birth and recounted each one’s birth story. Judy instilled in them faith, humor, good manners, good grammar, hand-writing thank you notes, kindness toward animals and elderly people, and respect for Native Americans. She adored her three sons-in-law. Her grandsons were the light of her life and filled her with a tremendous amount of pride. She enjoyed spoiling them with money and candy and encouraged mischievousness every chance she had. In addition to being a homemaker, Judy held many various jobs in her lifetime. The one that meant the most to her was as secretary of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cudahy, where she was able to use her many God-given talents and was known for her dedication, compassion and welcoming spirit for 25 years.

She had a carefree spirit, was quick-witted, and could always make people laugh with her sarcastic, self-deprecating sense of humor. Judy was very thoughtful and considerate about writing notes & sending cards to others on their birthdays and anniversaries or just because. She was the best friend you could ever hope for. When it came to entertaining friends in her home and preparing holiday dinners for the family, Judy was the consummate hostess. She always put a great deal of thought, care and time into making these events perfect and enjoyable for everyone.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, old movies, creating her own Christmas cards & valentines and crafting handwoven baskets. Judy loved Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell, Joan Rivers, George Clooney, Jon Hamm, watching Jeopardy and kicking butt when playing Trivial Pursuit. She was famous for her delicious potato salad and made a point of telling others she wanted “to be packed in it wearing a padded bra and white go-go boots,” requests that her daughters ultimately (and wisely) vetoed.

Survived by her dear friends Marge Couch, Mary & Art Pulizos, Penny Scherf, Carroll “Harp” Harper, Leo Wegerbauer, Bill & Sue Holicek, Joe & Connie Krucky, Pastor Bruce & Lindy Cheever, Dick & the late Dor Koehn, Gary Hanson, Pat & the late Jack Peot, Pastor Paul & Maryellen Sorensen, as well as a host of other family members and friends.
Preceded in death by her cherished brother-in-law Robert Daniels, and friends Jan Swan, Donna Wegerbauer, Judy Harper, and her sweet, precious dog Stitches.

Judy’s daughters express their deepest thanks to her beloved doctors and others who made it possible in numerous ways for her to live in her home independently as her health continued to decline, especially Drs. John Linscott and Jeff Hall; Julia Garman (Visiting Nurse Assoc.); Jenny Wozniak, Alane, Linda & Kelly (Aurora at Home hospice nurses); Sue Szmania (Comfort Keepers); Leigh Ann Meyer (Aurora pharmacist), Roy Koski and the caring staff of LindenGrove-New Berlin. An additional note of thanks to Coralie Magnus, Susan Ploetz, and Richard H. Staats. In lieu of flowers, Judy requested memorial gifts to St. Mark’s Church in Cudahy or Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 499 Mission Taylor Road, Box Elder, MT 59521-8983.
