Raymond 97, of South Milwaukee, died peacefully January 22, 2026, closing a long and remarkable life that began on December 13, 1928.
Born to Patrick and Evelyn (nee Wood) Buckley, Ray was a graduate of Waukesha High School in 1947, where he excelled in football and track. Ray graduated from Whitewater College in 1955, earning his bachelor's degree in education. He served his country in the US Army from 1953 to 1955. As a proud Korean War Veteran, one of his greatest thrills was joining his son Tom on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight in 2016.
After being turned down twice, Ray struck gold when a beautiful blonde agreed to go out on a date. On June 25, 1955, he married his best friend, Barbara Sniderwin, of Mukwonago. For seventy years they cherished one another and devoted their lives and love to their children, Thomas (Diane) Buckley, Kathy (Mike McCann), Carol Kempka, and Mary (Richard) Horan. Treasured grandfather of Cynthia Buckley, Alison (Thomas Boshardy) Buckley, Andrew McCann, Elizabeth, Danny, Madeline, John and Annie Kempka, Katherine (Danny) O'Hanlon, and Evelyn (Kevin Flores) Horan. Adored PaPa to Alissa (Jeff Hunter) Buckley, Devan (Madison Curtis) Buckley, Maggie Hunter, Colin Boshardy, Hailey Blake, and Riley O'Hanlon.
Survived by dear sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Gallagher and Nancy Buckley. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill, John, Patrick, and James, brother-in-law Tom Gallagher and adored grandson Aaron Buckley. Also survived by many special nieces and nephews spread around the country, leaving many memories of great times.
Ray taught History and Geography for 28 years at South Milwaukee Junior High where he formed many close friendships. He enjoyed the game of golf and the jokes and camaraderie that came with it. In retirement, he hit two holes in one. Ray was an eternal optimist, and loved life's simple pleasures.
The best way to honor Ray is to take a walk, breathe in nature's beauty, cheer on the Badgers and Packers, and above all, be kind to one another. Visitation on May 9 at Divine Mercy Parish (800 Marquette Ave, South Milwaukee) from 9:30 to 11 AM with Mass at 11 AM.
