Mary Natalie Shelby Grant, born December 17, 1933, in Antigo, Wisconsin, entered eternal rest surrounded by her loving daughters. She was lovingly cared for in her final days by the compassionate staff at The Woods of Caledonia and caring nurses of St. Croix Hospice. Mary was the beloved daughter of Raymond and Mary Shelby and grew up alongside her brother, John "Jack" (Julie) Shelby.
She was a proud graduate of St. Catherine's High School. Mary built a life centered on faith, family, and resilience. In December 1953, she married Ralph A. Grant Jr. As a devoted military wife for 24 years, Mary traveled across the country, raising six children—Ralph A. Grant III, Mark C. Grant (Beth), Kent D. Grant, Richard M. Grant (Wendi), Tina M. Meinen (Daniel), and Katherine M. Galica (Scott). Four of her children were born at different military bases as the family moved to support Ralph's service. While Ralph served overseas, Mary's steadfast love and strength nurtured their growing family. Though their marriage ended in 1977, the strong family bond they created endured as a testament to Mary's dedication. At age 45, after being out of the workforce for 18 years, Mary embraced the challenges of single motherhood with courage and determination. She worked tirelessly to support her daughters while exemplifying grace and perseverance.
Mary was blessed with eight grandchildren—Jennifer Fountain (Joseph), Scott Grant, Mark Grant II, Sarah Grant, Calvin Grant, Raven Grant, Madison Meinen, Brianna Meinen, and Douglas Galica (Julia)—as well as nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.She spent her early days of retirement taking care of Douglas Galica, Madison Meinen, who she has a special bond with. She also shared a special bond with her nieces and nephews from Jack's family.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Mary drew strength from her faith and found joy in simple pleasures such as bowling with friends, cheering on the Packers, and crafting intricate knitted creations that reflected her patience and talent. Mary's memory will be forever cherished by those who knew her as a woman of unwavering faith and unconditional love for her family. May she rest in peace in the loving embrace of our Lord.
