Bernice Czarnezki

April 12, 1926 — September 28, 2024

Bernice Evelyn West Czarnezki, a beloved mother, grandmother, and devoted community volunteer, passed away peacefully at the age of 98. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Victor and Katherine Leben, Bernice was one of three children, preceded in death by her brothers Victor (Janet) and Robert (Dee) Leben. During World War II, Bernice contributed to the war effort by working in assembly at Douglas Aircraft in Chicago, showcasing her dedication to her country. She is survived by her children, Richard (Theresa) West, Karen Mikula, Betsy (Scott) Muggenthaler, and Chris (Tina) Czarnezki, along with her many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A lifelong advocate for service, Bernice volunteered tirelessly for numerous organizations. She served as an alderperson and poll worker, assisted with South Milwaukee flu clinics, and organized the Tuesday dance for seniors for 25 years. At the Milwaukee Airport, she welcomed travelers as a greeter at the Travelers Aid station. Her commitment to her community extended to South Milwaukee High School, the Performing Arts Center, and the Trinity Memorial Hospital Advisory Board, among others. In 2018, Bernice was honored by the Mayor of South Milwaukee for over 40 years of distinguished service. A dedicated member of the South Shore Lions Club, she served as treasurer and received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for her humanitarian efforts. She was also recognized as Citizen of the Year by the 128th Air Refueling Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard and acknowledged by the SE Suburban Unit of the Wisconsin Democratic Party for her unwavering commitment. Known for her indomitable spirit, Bernice loved reading and enjoyed games, spending countless hours playing Rummikub with family and dominoes and sheepshead with friends. A special tradition of hers was celebrating her grandchildren's birthdays with $2 bills, a gesture that brought smiles to their faces. In honoring her legacy, we celebrate by indulging in candy, enjoying fried seafood, and embracing life as she would have loved. Bernice will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the community she served with such passion. A private family memorial service will be held to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the South Shore Lions Club in Bernice's honor.
