Al became a recipient of the Oak Creek Citizen of the Year award in 2003.
He was relentless in his pursuit to serve his country and fulfill his dream of working at the 128
th
Wisconsin Air National Guard, so much so that he would pedal his way to the airbase every day after high school pestering them to be hired until one day he was finally told to report to work that coming Saturday. He was positioned as the base crew chief for the F89 Scorpion jet fighter as well as the night flying supervisor, ultimately ranking as MSGT Crew Chief and Flight Engineer serving at the 128
th
Air Refueling Wing from 1957-1994 at which point being transferred to the Retired Reserve. Al's active-duty overseas operations included Operation Creek Party (Germany), Operation Desert Shield (Saudi Arabia), Operation Desert Storm (Cairo, Egypt) and the Persian Gulf War. Honors received: Combat Readiness Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Flight Engineer Extraordinaire. He loved to reminisce of his time served, the places the air force took him and his amazing coworkers that were truly his family. Hacksaw Hobbs and Hobbicheck were nicknames that he picked up along the way and stuck with him for a lifetime.
Al was an insurance agent for American Family for nearly 30 years, where he continued to faithfully serve his family, friends and customers (who also became friends). He earned such accolades as Agent of the month and the J.D. Power award on multiple occasions.
Al loved the outdoors, especially fishing, feeding the birds and cutting his lawn…but mostly just being with his family. Many great annual family vacations were spent and fond memories made in Eagle River as well as at their place in Orange Lake, FL.
We surely can hear Al/Dad/Grandpa/Great Grandpa saying his favorite words now in heaven
