Obituary for Jacqueline Baranek (Magnusson)

Jacqueline Baranek, (nee Magnusson), 92, beloved wife of the late Carl Baranek of Cudahy, WI, peacefully passed away in her sleep on February 11th, 2022. Born on January 30,1930 in Racine, WI to the late Florence (Magnusson) Miller. Jackie was raised by her maternal grandmother, Clara (Magnusson) Phipps.

Growing up in Racine, Wisconsin, Jacqueline worked many jobs in the early years which included the counter at her grandmother’s diner while finishing high school, a popcorn girl at the local movie theater, and later as a typist for local businesses. At a fish fry while out with her Grandma and Phil Phipps, Jackie met WWII veteran fighter-bomber Carl Baranek who asked her to take square dance lessons, whisking her off her feet.

Married on May 12, 1951, the couple moved to Detroit, where their first daughter Karen, was born in 1953, and later settled closer to home, in Cudahy, Wisconsin. Carl worked as a builder there, and Jackie managed his books while raising their young family. Two more daughters soon arrived: Debbie in 1955 and Marie in 1959.

The family moved to a home on S. Lake Drive designed and built by Carl and decorated by Jackie with love. Volunteering and caring for others were some of the many gifts Jackie shared during her life. As her girls grew, Jackie became a talented seamstress and homemaker, known for rich comfort food, and detailed quilt work. She was the primary caretaker for ailing loved ones, nursing her mother, grandmother, and sister-in-law, all in her home. When not bouncing grand-babies or visiting her dear friends, she could be found serving as a board member for the Cudahy/St. Francis Interfaith Program where she was treasurer for eight years. She was a chief inspector at the polls, and later became membership chairman for the Nativity of the Lord Christian Ladies. She was a proud member of the Wisconsin Slovak Historical Society, involved with Cudahy’s Lion’s Club, and enjoyed venturing out with local Red-Hatters. Jackie was also a skilled craftswoman. She created intricate porcelain dolls, fur teddy bears, quilted, sewed voraciously, and enjoyed working on her computer. Her grace, kindness, bright smile, and incredible heart will be terribly missed by all.

Jacqueline is survived by three children: Karen (Mark) Sostarich, Debbie Rose, and Marie (Kenton) Rose, her grandchildren Brianne (Keith) Pitts, Samantha Sostarich, Chelsea (Kyle) Johnson, Alex (Jacki) Sostarich, Jacqueline, Elise, Carlton, & Mason Rose, and great-grandchildren, August & Emma Pitts, Amelia & Clark Johnson.

The family would like to thank the staff of Brighton Hospice for their support and care during hospice. A very special thanks to the Sylvan Crossings Creekside staff attending to her needs and being friends to Jackie and the family during her time of residence.
