Obituary for Gertrude Veskovic

Gertrude “Gertie” Veskovic (nee Pilarski)

Her life story is long and complex, full of untold challenges and resilience. Always meeting each trial with courage and perseverance, she never lost her love of life and inner goodness. From wartime refugee to immigrating with nothing to her new home in the US, she had courage to be admired. Her later years brought the deserved reward of love as a Mom, Grandma and Oma; nothing meant more to Gertie than being surrounded by the love of her family. Her family will forever miss and always be grateful for the strength, love and goodness she brought to us. We will always treasure our memories with her. Rest well, we love you.

Gertrude Veskovic peacefully passed away December 27, 2020. Gertie was born in Germany August 29, 1922 and immigrated to the United States as a young adult living most of these years in South Milwaukee, WI. Dearly loved by daughter Desa (Carl) Gilmore; granddaughters Sarah (fiancé Jonathan), Laura (Jason); great-granddaughters Zoe and Evelyn. Fond sister of Konrad, Günther (Helga) and Helga. Also survived by nieces, nephews, family and friends. Two special loves in her life preceded her in death, daughter Roksanda and great-granddaughter Sophia. Also preceded in death were much cherished sisters and brother-in-law Hildegard and Otti (Ralf) and sister-in-law Elisabeth. Easily loved by all who knew her, she enjoyed people, life and most of all, time with her family. This petite, but resilient Mom, Grandma, Oma, sister and friend will be deeply missed.

Thank you to all nurses and doctors at St. Luke’s South Shore ER, 2nd and 3rd floors who cared for Gertie in her last days. Special thanks to Nurse Anna, nursing staff and doctors on 2nd floor for their compassionate care for Gertie and family in her final hours. Private family burial will be held as she wished.
