Obituary for Donald Nell

Long time St. Francis resident, Donald L. Nell, 83, died June 17, 2020. Donald Nell was born in South Milwaukee, WI on 5/31/1937 to Helen and Lawrence Nell.

Don was a dedicated family man and provider. As the oldest of 7 children, he often told the story of how he went to work at age of 11 to help support his family at the local bowling alley manually setting the pins and then jumping out of way as the balls rolled down the lane. Some of the fondest memories his daughters have of him is teaching them how to fish which included hooking your own worm and cleaning the fish. If he was going to teach you something, he was going to teach you how to do it right with no shortcuts.

This work ethic continued throughout his life. Don worked at Patrick Cudahy, now known as Smithfield Foods for over 50 years until he was forced to retire. He would also step up and help a family business, Cashen Movers, whenever they needed an extra hand. Don would always be the first one out the door to help a neighbor in need or chat you up on his daily walks to Greene Park. He made people feel safe and you knew he had your back.

Don was extremely patriotic and served in the Marines during the Korean war. He was an American through and through and had very strong beliefs about nation and country and wasn’t afraid to share his opinion. Being a union man, Don gladly walked the picket line in the 80’s advocating for worker’s rights and fair wages. Don was proud of the life he built with grit, determination and hard work.

Don was especially happy that all of his grandchildren went to college and especially of his grandson Tony who served 8 years in the Army. He was married to Nancy Anderson for 30 years until their divorce and has been a loyal and loving companion to Christine Klockow for the past 30 years.

Don was an active member of Member of Nativity of the Lord in Cudahy and proud member of Local United Food and Commercial Worker Union and the Moose Lodge.

Don is survived by his sisters, Marilyn Wilson, Joyce Jankowski, Gloria Pickett, Deborah Budge, his daughters, Robin LaCount and Heidi Borlick and his grandchildren Anthony Nell, Keith Borlick, Kegan Borlick, Annaliese LaCount and his partner Christine Klockow and her daughters Darby and Sandra. He was preceded in death by his brothers David Nell and Kenneth Nell.

Don chose to be cremated and a Visitation will be held on July 10th from 1pm-3pm at Molthen-Bell Funeral Home at 700 Milwaukee Ave., South Milwaukee, WI 53702.
